Research / case study

One vacancy, one reply in 58 minutes.

How a single dated signal on a hotel's careers page became a call the next morning, and what the message deliberately left out.

1 signalone dated vacancy, nothing else

The signal

A hotel on one of the Wadden islands was looking for a sous-chef, and the vacancy on its own careers page offered housing with the job. CIDE read the page, kept the date it was read, and marked it as the reason to write.

Nothing else went into the message: no funding news, no guesswork about the hotel's plans, no compliment about its website.

The reading

Offering housing is a strong move for a kitchen job. When a vacancy with housing stays open, the likely problem is not pay or conditions. It is reach: the cooks who would take the job do not know it exists.

That reading became the claim of the message. It is specific enough to be wrong, which is what makes it worth answering.

The person

The message went to the person closest to the problem [role: confirm with the client], the one who feels an empty spot in the kitchen on every busy weekend. The more senior people were left for later, each with their own angle.

The message

to[Recipient], [hotel on a Wadden island]subjectYour sous-chef, with housing

Good afternoon [name],

You are looking for a sous-chef and offering housing with it. A Then pay is not the problem. Reach is: the cooks you want do not know the job exists. B

You are the first to feel what an empty spot in the kitchen costs, especially in high season. C We place experienced cooks from across Europe, with housing and paperwork arranged.

Shall I send you three profiles next week, of people available now? D

Kind regards,

What happened

A reply came 58 minutes after the message was sent. It agreed to a call the next morning, followed by questions to see whether the profiles would fit.

From the first message to a call. The reply came within the hour.

What this does not prove

One reply is one reply. It shows that a dated, checkable reason gets read; it does not show that every message will be answered within the hour.

What we took from it

Specific beats clever.A plain fact from the prospect's own page did more than any hook would have.
Write to who feels it.The person with the daily problem answers first, and carries it upward.
Ask for something small.Three profiles next week is easy to say yes to. A demo is not.
